Prosecutors start at around $50,000 and can make as much as $350,000+. All prosecutors work for the local, state or federal government. The location makes a big difference, too. Prosecutors in major cities are paid more than those in small communities. The background and experience will also help determine the rate of pay.

It depends on the size of the jurisdiction. A prosecutor in a small area (population 30K to 80K) will likly start around $42K to $46K with a bump to $50K+ after about 3 years of experince. The elected prosecutor in a similare population makes around $65K to $75K.

Depending on the area a prosecutor works and if they are private or government employed a prosecutor can make anywhere from 60000-350000 a year. The most important variable is area a NY prosecutor makes more than an Idaho

The only areas possible are state and federal. There is no such thing as a private prosecutor.  add a comment

In the US the average is 62,000. The salary depends on the location, years of experience and other benefits. The average in New York and San Diego is 73,000.

Why does it matter what city or state you are in? Cyn(408) said, "The salary depends on the location," What would be the best city or state to go to if you wanted to be a prosecutor?  add a comment

There is no average salary. It has to do with the state, city and what that particular court system has deemed adequate as a salary.

It depends on the jurisdiction where the prosecutor is assigned. Prosecutors are government employees, so they are paid accordingly. A prosecutor in NYC will make much more than one in Bloomington, Indiana, for example. There are prosecutors at different levels of government, too (city, county, state, federal). Experience plays into it. Salaries range: $55,000 - $375,000

The amount of money that a prosecutor makes varies depending on the location they work, the amount of hours they put in, and the quality of their work. For example, a prosecutor in New York will make more money then a prosecutor in a smaller city such as Tennessee most likely.

Tennessee is a state- not a city.  add a comment

It depends on the area in which you live. Also, if you are interested in private practice, then you will probably make less money than someone signed to a firm.

The amount that prosecutors earn varies with the jurisdiction and the experience of the individual prosecutor. Federal prosecutors earn more than their state counterparts. In general, however, prosecutors are some of the lowest paid lawyers in the profession. Some make thirty thousand or less per year.
