If the turtle is about 6" to 8" inches, it would be fine in a wading pool size area. Habitat does depend on the exact size of the turtle.

Depending on the size of the turtle, it should have approximately three square feet of floor space per eight inches of turtle. An adult turtle should have around five square feet to roam around in. Turtles caught in the wild need a little extra room, if possible.

The smallest recommended size of a pen is 4' by 4'. Now I personally have two box turtles and they are in a 100 gallon aquarium and they are just fine in there, having plenty of room and are happy. There is no size limit to how big there living space is, it can be as big as you like.

Most box turtles are small enough that they should be fine in a small terrarium around 20 gallons or so. It is advisable however that you take them out of their enclosure and let them walk around a bit every once in a while.

Atleast the size of a Rubbermaid tub. Box turtles need plenty of room to walk around. You would need sides that aren't opaque because some turtles try and try to get out when they see their surroundings, or their surroundings will scare them and they won't relax until the sides of their home is covered.
