Some people are prone to sweeling no matter what. The swelling however should not last for more than 2 to 3 days. It aslo depends on the location of your tattoo. If it is low on a leg, lower part of your arm, foot ect.. It is expected because of gravity to swell a bit.

Swelling at the site of a tattoo should be minimal and should definitely not include redness or puffiness that extends beyond the tattoo itself. If the swelling is red, itchy, or generally uncomfortable you need to consult a physician. There is condition called cellulitis, inflammation of skin cells, which can actually be life threatening if left untreated.

After the first 3 to 5 days your tattoo might be red and puffy a little bit. If it stays that way for longer than a week then you might want to go back and get it checked out. Also you have to make sure you wash it properly and put healing lotion on it 5 times a day.

It is expected that the tattoo will swell a little bit. If there is a lot of swelling,and/or redness and pain, then it is not normal. Some indivuduals can be allergic to the ink used, and swelling can be one of the first signs of an allergic reation.
