I think couples should spend at least a week's worth of hour long sessions together, depending on whether or not they have particular things they would like to discuss. I think it varies for each couple though so they should go with how they feel about it instead of following a guideline.

I know several couples, including myself that have been married for thirty plus years. We did not attend any kind of counseling prior to our marriages and are doing just fine.
