How much weight-lifting should football players do in middle school?

My son just started playing and I think the coach is asking for too much.

Not much at all, they should be introduced to pull ups, push ups, sit ups, and other rigorous activities. But weights should not be involved until high school.

I completely understand your concern. However, I believe it is perfectly acceptable for a middle school athlete to begin lifting wieghts. The core lifts should consist of Bench Presses, deadlifts, and squats. There has been much debate as to whether lifting will stunt growth in growing children however that seems to be a complete myth. Just stay injury free.

It's fine as long as the weight isn't so much that it will injure him. If he just started and he is sore, that is normal for beginners.

Very little weightlifting should be done by a middle school child until his body fully develops and can handle the stress of lifting weights on a regular basis.
