It depends on if you have extreme weather conditions where you live. If you do, stain it every year. A good rule of thumb is every other year.

A deck should be stained at least every 3 to 5 years. You will know when the time is right because the deck's appearance will begin to look worn and discolored.

I have had many decks and I wash and stain them once a year. however if you have extreme weather twice a year may be necessary.
