A malnourished horse is not used to having food in its stomach, so you would want to start by giving the horse a quarter scoop of food every 2 days

You need a feed that is high in Protein because Protein is one of the things that help the horse to gain weight. It's best to research online or ask someone at your local feed store about which feeds are formulated for underweight horses. Feed the horse hay as well and make sure he/ she gets plenty of water.

Go to your local farm store and ask for supplements to put into his food. Do not immediately feed him great amounts of food, but gradually build him to a normal, nutritional diet.

4 Begin by carefully introducing small quantities of a clean, fresh grass hay. First cutting, no alfalfa to begin with. Once the horse is eating hay well, begin slowly introducing a higher fat feed. Soaked, shredded beet pulp fed two to three times a day is also beneficial to weight gain. Combine with free choice hay, and horse will gain well.
