With most bulbs you do not have to dig them up. If you do decide to dig them up then you do so when the growth has drooped and the plant looks dead. Then you dig them up, cut the growth off the tops and you can either freeze them or store them in air tight cool dry place.

Ranunculus plants die down in late spring, and the bulbs can be dug in mid to late summer. After several years in the ground, they are ready to dig.

It is best to dig around the middle of the fall season. Ranunculus bulbs thrive best in cool weather and should never be planted in the spring or summer.

You should not dig them up at all, just leave them in the pot an leave for the winter in a cold dark place. Only dig them up if you want to divide the plant.
