One might argue about the exact definitions of communism and socialism. In one sense, communism is a form of socialism. But Cuba is one of the few countries in the world in which power lies solely in the hands of the Communist Party. The Party is headed by Fidel Castro and his brother Raul.

Cuba is officially Communist. In reality, it is ruled by the Castro family, who leave everyone else impoverished while party members have a standard of living not much below that of industrialized nations. Cuba has never had a democracy, and all real socialist nations are democratic. Castro has never had a real election or competition for office.
