Durock! Simply the best and I have not seen anyone complain about it!! I know several people to tried durock and now recommend it to others as they feel it is so much better. Why don't you have a look at costs and reviews about durock before you decide.

It really depends on your budget. If this is a good fit for your dollar, you will get a good-quality product.

Have you considered using Wonderboard? I've heard that Hardibacker sometimes gives problems where the tiles stick to it. I know quite a few people who don't realy trust HB

Reply by busyfingers (239):
WonderBoard crumbles a little too easily and seems to have an affinity for water - both big problems. I've used HB and have had no major probs. You need to install it as per instructions. The sticking tiles problem is probably due to a poor install.  add a comment

Hardibacker is a fine, mid-grade metal fireplace. All metal fireplaces are basically the same. Coleman makes a fine model that I've used for years. In the past people make their own out of scrap metal so you should be fine with any off the shelf product.

If you intend to use it more as a facing, yes Hardibacker is a good option on a fireplace. It is fire resistant but if you intend to use it to line the fireplace, no, Hardibacker will not work very well.

The Hardibacker is a high quality stove that would be a good choice. Whether or not it is the best is a matter of personal opinion. Talk to your local dealer about the pros and cons of the different brands of metal fireplaces.
