Tarry black stool can be a sign of blood in the digestive system, especially if his diet has been changed. You should probably take him to the vet if he's showing any other signs of ill health.

His diet may not have changed but if it is something that he has been eating for a while the way his body processes it may have. Dogs poop should be a rich brown - this a healthy poo. Too light would be like extra cream coffee and black is too dark.

No, it is not. Your dog may have upper intestinal bleeding which shows black in his feces. If his stool is very hard, he may have obstipation, which is an extreme presentation of constipation requiring IV hydration and intervention to clear his intestines, as well as nutritional guidance.

If it is a sudden change, then no it's not a good sign. Black, tarry stools are caused by blood passing through the digestive tract.

Absolutely positively not, take to the vet immediately. This means he has blood in his stool. It looks black because of the part of the digestive tract that's bleeding.
