Should I be concerned about a cough that produces mucus?

It depends on the characteristics of the mucus. If it is thin and clear and is not accompanied by a sore throat or fever, it's typically nothing to worry about. If it's thick and tenacious, any other color than clear and/or accompanied by a sore throat and/or fever, it's probably an infection.

No, mucus accompanies most coughs. If you cough up some mucus just spit it out if you are near sink, otherwise swallow it. It may be gross but it would grosser to spit it on the floor. There are such things as dry coughs, but coughs that have mucus are much more common.

A cough that produces mucus is not by itself a concern. However, if the mucus is yellow or green, accompanied by fever or malaise, you should call your doctor.

During flu season, it's common to cough up a little mucus from time to time. However, if the mucus is a greenish color or has blood in it, you should be seen by the doctor.
