Begin taking folic acid or folate a couple of months prior to conceiving. This will help protect against neural tube defects like spina bifada. Prenatal vitamins are an excellent option. You may also want to consider ovulation kits if you don't have your cycle charted out.

First, start off by taking a good prenatal vitamin, or at a minimum a decent amount of folic acid which prevents birth defects. You may also both want to go to your regular doctor for a physical to make sure that you have no health problems that would make you refrain from getting pregnant.

Know when you are ovulating. Its usually about 14 days after the first day of your period. Have sex around that time. Once you ovulate, the conception window is closed.

Start taking a pregnancy multivitamin immediately, this should contain folic acid to benefit your baby if you do become pregnant. Additionally, unless you are underweight or very thin you should try to lose a few pounds before becoming pregnant. This can lessen the impact of the baby weight on your body.

If you and your husband are making the decision to conceive there are things you can do for yourself in preparation. First, you can mark the day your cylce starts and stops. This will help you know when you are ovulating. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and make sure you get plenty of excercise.
