Is there really plays in volleyball? The back row hits it, someone sets it, and then someone up front tries to spike it. Keep it simple.

A set is where you have out-stretched fingers above your head to hit the ball. A dig is where two out-stretched arms hit a ball aimed low at you. A spike is where you smash the ball back at your opponent. A serve starts a point.

The basics of volleyball are bump, set and spike. Teams strive to have this sequence on their side of the court each time. When the opponent hits it over, the first play should be a bump so you can control it. The bump goes to a taller player who then sets it straight up for a spiker for the kill.

You will need to teach your team about how to bump, set and spike. The optimum team will hit the ball three times to get best chance of a score.

coach you have to toss a ball into play. From the very moment the ball crosses the net, someone needs to call out what´s going on. There´s something that could be said on every hit on every play. "Out," "In," "Mine," "2 Up," "I´m here," the list is endless.

Setting the ball, spiking the ball, serving the ball (overhand and underhand), volleying the ball are all plays that you would incorporate.
