First I would say keep trying and talk to a lactation consultant for help. Second I would say get a good pump and if you are really having trouble with the baby latching on, etc... you will minimally be able to pump and give your baby the benefit of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding support lines and breast feeding support groups are available. Advice can be gained from health visitors or midwives. Check that the baby is positioned correctly to latch on successfully. Milk can be expressed for bottle feeding, ensuring baby gets the nutrients without the worry of correct breastfeeding technique.

First you need to find out why breastfeeding is not going well. If it's a personal issue and you don't want to breastfeed anymore, then you can switch to formula. If it is not going well because your baby is not gaining weight, then you need to supplement with formula or donated breastmilk and find ways to increase your supply.

Finding information and support is critical to breastfeeding success. Meeting with a lactation consultant and a local La Leche League group will help with these needs. If necessary, pumping or supplementing can ensure that the baby is getting enough food until breastfeeding is well established.
