You will probably have bleeding for 4-8 weeks after it is inserted. You may also have cramp like pains due to it being inserted. Anything bad, see your doctor.

After insertion of an IUD you can feel slight or severe cramping. You may experience spotting as well. The IUD is known to cause weight gain as well as mood swings.

The side effect of an intrauterine device will include cramping abdominal pain which last up to a month, spotting, heavy menstruation, pelvic inflammatory disease, infection and infertility. It is also possible for the device to cause trauma to the uterus by perforating through the wall into the abdominal cavity. In this case surgery will be done to remove the device.

IUDs have effects related to insertion including bleeding and infection. After that they raise the risk or ectopic pregnancy as well as pelvic inflammatory disease. There is also the possibility of uterine rupture. There are also specific side effects related to whether it is a progesterone IUD or a copper IUD.

Side effects are never normal, however most common side effects are excessive pain during periods and intermittent bleeding in between periods. There is also a very small chance of pregnancy.

It is common to have heavier, longer periods that will decrease over time. The first week you can expect some cramping. Bleeding between periods can last the first 3 months.

I've found the side effects to be quite minimal. The most common, and certainly most annoying, is the occurence of heavier bleeding during the menstral cycle. Your periods sometimes last longer and you may have more cramping than usual. If your IUD is hormone based that may cause other side effects based on the hormone changes, including mood swings.

Using an IUD can cause anemia due to increased blood flow. It can also cause weight gain, headaches, increased blood pressure, acne, and depression. IUD can also cause lighter periods or stop them altogether. Periods can also be more painful and have heavier bleeding. Ovarian cysts can also be formed due to IUD.

IUDs can cause spotting or mild pain commonly. They also raise the risk of ectopic pregnancies. As well, there is always the concern about migration and or uterine perforation. They also have a higher risk of plevic inflammatory disease.
