Buy a good pair of walking shoes. Walking is one of the best, least expensive ways of loosing weight. Start slow, you can walk for 5 minutes 3 times a day, or whatever you are able to handle. Add some resistance training to build muscle, since muscle burns calories faster.

Stationary bicycling or using an elliptical trainer are good alternatives. These two types of exercises are gentler on the knees than running would be and they have always been reliable ways to burn calories. Swimming is another excellent alternative and works a wide range of muscles throughout the entire body. It is a great way to build stamina and endurance.

Swimming really works you up! Also, have you considered yoga, or pilates? They are calm, and surprisingly intense! Try brisk walking too. And learn to control your diet. A healthy diet with a good exercise schedule will help you on your way to a fitter, leaner, healthier body.

If you can't run, elliptical machines as well as bikes are a good alternative or exercising. Also, basic walking will do the job as well. After walking for 45 minutes the calories burned are comparable to running.
