Meat and cheese are probably the most expensive categories of food that you don't really need. Depending on what you drink, alcoholic beverages can be another expensive but unnecessary part of your diet.

I certainly can live without red meat, especially if I wanted to save some money. As a vegetarian, I can eat healthy by purchasing fruits, grains, and vegetables, and make delicious, nutrious meals. It would both cut costs and make me much healthier overall. I could probably live without chicken, fish, and pork as well.

If you want to save money on food, the best thing to eliminate is anything that comes from a restaurant. It is always cheaper to prepare food yourself. By the same token, heavily processed foods are also good to eliminate.

You can save money by cutting out processed foods such as lunch meat. Cook a little larger roast or ham the night before for sandwich meat or make your own chicken salad and you have an inexpensive luch that is good for you.

I'm vegetarian, so I save a lot on food. Organic foods are usually more expensive. Desserts, candy, chocolate are unhealthy and cost some money too.
