Let's watch sodium explode in water. First, put a little piece of sodium on the water. Then, it will explode and produce hydrogen gas. It is quite interesting. But there is a point that need your pay attention: Do not put too much sodium in water. It may hurt your kids.

You should be very careful using sodium. Sodium compunds include such items as common table-salt and are not dangerous. However, metallic sodium is very dangerous. When placed in contact with water it reacts violently and can even explode.

A flame test. Dissolve some kosher salt in warm water, dip a wire in the water and place the wire in direct flame. The flame will turn an intense yellow.

The most exciting thing to do with sodium, if you have sodium metal, is to drip water on it as this is a highly exothermic reaction i.e. slightly dangerous.

Sodium is very dangerous. It is stored in oil to prevent it from coming in contact with air. When exposed to water, sodium explodes. There are many videos of people with chunks of sodium throwing them into a lake and watching it explode.
