The key is creativity. People appreciate when time and effort is put into a gift. Some examples include a scrapbook or photo album, knit scarves/hats, poetry, and baked goods.

If you have access to a camera, you could try to sneak photographs of meaningful family moments, and then surprise them with the photos. Try writing a story for them.

If you knit can make clothing or blankets. If you draw or paint this would make a great gift. If you are good with your hands you can make a clay bowl etc.. If none of these are your specialty maybe a special cake would be nice.

An idea that never fails is homemade chocolate chip cookies and put them in a nice tin. Other ideas include homemade scrapbooks with photos and memorabilia of the persons childhood. Another good idea is a collage of pictures of the person at different times in the persons life and include any pets they may have had.

It seems like the favorite homemade comes from the kitchen. Needlepoint items are always nice. A lot can be done with silk flowers or if you're handy with a sewing machine, make some nice throw pillows.

If you like to bake, check out ideas from King Arthur catalog or even Martha Stewart site for upscale presentation ideas for home-baked goodies. Putting together a kit - sewing, tools, spa day or snow day - is another personal gift idea.

If you can knit, a knitted scarf or blanket is a good gift. A jar of premixed cookie mix of your own recipe. Make a decorated picture frame and include a picture of yourself and that person.

Baked goods are always appreciated by those with little or no time to bake. Try "gift in a jar" gifts by searching for recipes on the internet. Mix all the dry ingregients in a jar, tie with a pretty ribbon and tape the recipe to the outside of the jar.

If you sew at all, home made grocery shopping bags made out of durable material and with straps that will go up to your shoulders are wonderful! Made out of the right material and double stitched it will be far superior to anything they can buy!
