The key to decorating an apartment is using attractive, space saving decorating items. Add wall shelving that can hold decorative books and pictures. Use a trunk for a coffee table and store extra linens in it. Try painting only one wall to open things up while adding color.

Put curtains up it makes the place feel more homey. Also hang art work or shelves with pictures on them. You can also put up wall mounted candle holders. Then pick out a nice area rug that brings out the colors in your furniture. Another idea is to pick a nice neutral color for the walls and paint them.

First you should pick an item that intrigues you. Be it a vase or a rug, pick something to get hints from. Take the softest hues and use those as a wall color. Then choose items or furniture that compliment your item. A dark blue rug would mean grey or light blue walls and furniture in between.

Make sure that you don't break any of the landlords rules when decorating. Using bright pillows and posters you can help make up for not being able to paint. Since it is probly small make sure that everything that use had double functioning, such as footrest/storage, side table/bookshelf.

However you decorate it, make sure you decorate it so that it conveys who YOU are. Put pictures around the apartment of you and your friends or family. Use flowers, decorate for the seasons, start a garden on your balconey, use candles. Whatever conveys who you are as a person

Three things: lighting, color, and seating. Use multiple small lighting sources and design contrast between brightly-lit areas and darker, moodier areas. Paint at least one wall if you can, but use color as much as possible for psychological effect. And use seating to "instruct" people how to relate to each other. Get creative, adjust as you go, experiment, learn.

Go to the library and research decorating ideas for small spaces. Avoid clutter and collections. Create a single focal point in each room. Look for furniture that doubles for storage (an ottoman, upholstered seating cubes). Plan kitchen storage carefully and only keep or purchase what you have space for. In a smaller space, less is more.

Don't waste a lot of money buying new furniture, rugs, baubles, etc. Hunting for the used stuff will be worth your while.
