What I have done in the past to get friends and children interested in investing is to pick a solid company with a good track record and purchase a small block of shares and give it to them. I search the companies web site to see if they have a dividend reinvestment program as well.

As in gifts for kids? Disney, and staples like General Mills are always good. Gold might be a good gift investment as well. Other ideas might be safe stocks like Clorox and Exxon Mobil. OR you could buy some green stocks like Wind energy stocks or Anadarko Natural gas energy.

Our family tradition is to invest in something that you use or enjoy. Buy a stock that you buy the product for currently. Buy a restaurant stock if you enjoy dining there!

For young children, contribute to a 529 education savings plan. It grows tax free for their college education and the giver is not charged a gift tax. For older children and teens, buy a single share of stock and give it to them, so they can learn about stocks and investing from tracking that one stock.
