Ask if your presence is welcome and if it's okay to chat. Try asking for a sign of the ghost's presence. Yes or no questions are easier to answer.

You could start by asking the spirit very personal questions that only you and the spirit would know. Ask it what life is like as a spirit? Are they wandering around aimlessly on Earth? Or are they in a different "place" and your communication with it is like a telephone call? Are you disturbing it by calling?

Any question relating to a recently deceased loved one, particularly regarding the afterlife, for example, "Can you move on, or do you feel trapped in this universe? " This allows for the spirit to question it's purpose, and will help it move on.
