Label everything in your classroom and lead students in pronouncing the words. Ask them to identify words that have sounds in common. Beginning sounds and vowel sounds are easiest; build on these by moving into word families. Also, select books that have alliteration and assonance for out loud reading.

The best way to teach any kind of phonics to kids is by associating the visual letter to a sound. Start with easy sounds and progress to combinations.

One way to teach kindergarten phonics is by using an picture or object, saying the word and asking what sound that words starts with. You can then move on to what letter makes that sound and then into the other parts of the word.

When teaching phonics, try not to teach the sound of the alphabet. Try to teach the phonic sound of the letters. Using letters that can be seen and touch while sounding out the phonic sounds makes it more tangible for the students to learn. This gains the students interest and allows them to grasp the entire concept of the letter.

There is a great little song: A is Apple, a, a, a (repeating the sound), B is for bouncing ball, bah, bah, bah.

A good way is to teach the children the ABC's song. This needs to be supported with the use of flashcards so that the children can recognize the letters.
