It is important that college dorm roommates respect each others' space and right to the room. Keep the dorm room reasonably clean. Talk to your roommate to know what s/he expects, especially in terms of quiet and having visitors, and share your own expectations. If you both agree to abide by certain rules, do not break those rules.

All colleges have dormitory "ground rules" and make them very clear prior to, during and after orientation. Roommates make their own rules within that framework.

You need to respect each other's space, and not borrow things without asking. Be respectful when somebody is trying to study. Also, have rules about overnight guests or if you feel comfortable with members of the opposite sex coming in.

College roommates should always set up ground rules for themselves, because people vary on their acceptance of things. Things that should be discussed include whether overnight visitors are okay, especially whether the opposite sex can spend the night. There should also be a discussion of what things can be shared. You must also talk about sleep times or quiet times.
