Satin rabbits were created by accident in Penleton, Indiana by a gentleman named Walter Huey. This was in 1934. Mr. Huey had Havanas and was trying to bred them to create a better colour but ended up creating a rabbut with fur that has a satiny feel. They are also a large rabbit growing to between eight and eleven pounds.

The "satiny" fur has a smaller diameter shaft with the shell of the hair being somewhat transparent which allows the pigment to shine through more. The fur is described as dense and silky. The brilliant sheen of the coat should be visible when the rabbit is about 3 months old.
