There are a couple advantages to desktops. First, they are cheaper. You can buy a desktop and laptop with the same components, and the desktop will usually be cheaper. A desktop is also easier to upgrade. If you want a better graphics card (or an additional one), or install a wireless card (none USB), it's easy to do.

Desktops are cheaper for the same performance but of course are less mobile. Another big plus is overall expandability. You can simply put in a bigger processor or video card or what have you. Laptops often come with more power efficient parts though since that directly impacts the battery life.
