The first thing you need to do is to see if your opponents are using a bat with an ASA certification mark (either a 2000 or a 2004 mark.) If there's no mark, the bat isn't legal. However, some bats have a mark but have been ruled illegal by the ASA - a list is on the ASA website.

As far as I'm aware, an illegal bat is any bat found on the ASA's list of illegal bats, which includes but is not limited to any bat with a barrel made of composite material. Some examples of illegal bats are the Easton CV12 and the TPS SB-206 Catalyst. Any bat not certified is illegal.

ASA bat's almost exclusively will have a mark on them specifying that they are legal for ASA ball. I'm pretty sure some types of bats such as composite bats are actually banned now according to the 2011 ASA rule upgrades - if you can and check you can't go wrong.

The ASA has many guidelines and rules governing the use of illegal bats. Corked bats or bats that contain titanium alloy are illegal in ASA games played in North America.
