Running uphill improves your stamina, so running backwards will improve your stamina and speed with regards to running backwards, as if you are playing defense against a fast opponent.

It works your hamstrings more than front running, and it also increases your balance, coordination, and flexibility by challenging your muscles and brain in new ways. However, it won't increase your cardiovascular ability, as you can't tax your heart going backwards as much as when running forward.

Running uphill backwards will give you many of the same beenfits as running uphill forwards, such as improved cardio, muscle strength, etc. but will also strengthen muscles that don't usually get used as much when you run forwards.

Never having does this myself, I would imagine that running uphill backwards would be great for my posture. I have walked backwards and my back naturally straightened itself. Simultaneously, the abdominal muscles and stomach were pulled and tightened. Legs became stronger; calf muscles more muscular. Result: a leaner, toned body.

In response to the 2nd answer by Lonelywolf: You are correct in the 1st part of your reply, but wrong w/the last part where you say "it won't increase your cardio ability." Backwards running/walking is MORE of a cardio workout then forward.
