Conjunctivitis or pink eye is generally not serious in cats. It can be caused by foreign substances in the eye, or irritating fluids that the cat came in contact with. This type of pink eye generally goes away very quickly. Sometimes trauma can cause conjunctivitis. Rarely, chronic pink eye can be caused by immune diseases, but not often.

Pink eye (feline conjunctivitis) is generally caused by feline herpes virus. Flare ups may reoccur despite ongoing treatment. Keep the virus at bay by dosing feline Lysine supplement and try to keep the cat from rubbing its eye. Wipe eye gently with a warm, wet cloth to remove any residue.

Pink eye is caused by a bacterial infection in cats the same as in human beings, and should be treated with medication and with cleanliness in the same way to cut the circle of infection. Cats can re-infect each other through contact even with treatment causing resistant strains, so it's important to quarantine infected cats.
