In a bean seed there are two cotyledons, and an epicotyl surrounded by the seed coat, which makes up the entire seed known as the embryo. In a corn seed there is one cotyldon, and the endosperm makes up half of the embryo while the epicotyl makes up the other.

The different parts of a seed are testa or the seed coat, hilum, cotyledon or the seed leaf, plumule or the shoot, and the radicle or the root. The seed also contains endosperm and the embryo. Many people think that the embryo is the most important part of the seed.
