A Cape Cod style house is the first truly American style house and is designed to withstand the harsh New England winters. It has a steeply pitched roof, a pronounced overhang over the windows, a chimney centered over the front door, double hung windows with small panes, and wood shingle or clapboard exterior sealed with pine pitch.
