What are the most effective pain relieving gels?

I use them after sports, not for chronic pain.

Doctors, physical therapists, and pain specialists all recommend 'Biofreeze', which comes in a gel and cream ($6.59). Biofreeze works great for minor pain and has little side effects on skin.

There are several pain relieving gels on the market and I have not tried them all. However, I have tried a few. I personally prefer Tiger Balm. It comes in a smaller container than most, so it is easy to take with you. In addition, it really works! The smell is not as strong as the others I've tried either.

I have been using Mineral Ice for years now. It provides a long lasting deep relief. I usually use it before going to bed and find relief for many hours.

Medical opinion varies on the efficacy of topical gels. However, gels containing salicylate, which is found in plants, are considered the best for muscle aches. "Sore No More" gel, which is made from a combination of six plant extracts and also includes menthol, camphor and capsaicin, is probably the best bet to relieve and prevent sports aches.
