This is not a concern if you get your dog from a reputable source. Viciousness is caused by humans and training. Dogs have different temperaments, research which works for you.

Mass media and poor judgement have "demonized" certain breeds by calling them "vicious dogs". Truth is no breed is naturally dangerous, any healthy dog can be a stable dog, providing the owner brings the leadership the dog needs. If you have no experience, choose a submissive low-energy dog.

It really depends on their breeding and upbringing. Any dog can be considered a vicious dog, especially if they have had bad media in the past, i.e. boxers. If you want a more subdued dog look at breeds that have not been bred for herding, hunting, or fighting. Labs usually make a good first dog.

Any dog can be made vicious by an aggressive human. While some breeds (pit bulls) get a bad rap, they can be true and loyal pets and if trained great with children. If you have children, take them with you when looking for a dog to see if they are compatible

Dogs were bred for different purposes so, for you, a dog bred to protect would be a poor choice. The dogs most likely to bite are intact males with no training or socialization. A well trained female sporting, hound, non sporting or toy breed might work out best for you.

Pitbulls and Rottweilers are the most notorious vicious dogs and should be avoided. Doberman Pinschers and German Shepherds have also been singled out as sometimes having viciuos streaks.
