One must be at least 18 years old, physically fit, pass an FBI security background check, and be of good moral character. You must also be a high school graduate to join the enlisted corps, or have a four year college degree to be commissioned as an 0-1 (Ensign) officer.

The US Coast Guard is a selective service requiring many of the same basic requirements other services have, like being a US Citizen or resident to join. An individual must meet age requirements being 17 or older but less than 27 (waiverable). Must have a high school education or GED.
