Weaning begins as soon as solid food is introduced. Usually this phase occurs around six months. Gradually, as the baby eats more solids, the amount of breastmilk she consumes will decrease. The baby may nightwean first, and then decrease the number of feedings during the day until they are no longer necessary.

The three stages of weening your baby are: First Stage: 4-6 months old feed them Pureed Foods (runny), Second Stage: 6-9 months feed them mashed foods(chunkless), Third Stage: 9-12 months feed them (soft) chopped foods. You introduce these foods as you drop the feedings. Start out slow introducing one food at a time to check for allergy.

Generally it is best to follow the baby and what they want. But first you need to get the baby to take a bottle or cup (if old enough). It is very easy for a baby to not get enough fluids after breastfeeding has stopped, that is the most important thing.

You need to start cut out breastfeeding sessions until you are down to the last feeding, which should be the one right before bed. Finally you cut that one out and replace that feeding with a bottle. It should be pretty easy because after your baby is a certain age they won't really want the breast anymore.
