All symptoms are caused by muscle weakness, which worsens with activity and fatigue. Early symptoms are drooping eyelids, trouble carrying or grasping, and difficulty swallowing. Resting may improve the symptoms temporarily. When the muscles that control breathing are affected, this condition can be life-threatening.

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder that causes severe weakness in the muscles of the face, head, and neck. This leads to symptoms such as ptosis (drooping eyelids), diplopia (double vision, due to the eye muscles growing too weak to allow normal eye movements), and difficulties swallowing and speaking clearly. In severe cases, breathing can also be somewhat impaired.

The number one symptom of myasthenia gravis is muscles that are easily fatigued after repetitive use. The proximal muscles (i.e. ones closet to the trunk of the body) are most likely to be affected first.
