For metal ducts or fiberglass ducts use air duct tape, comes in a roll like duct tape, there is also a duct sealant which can be purchased at home depot or Lowe's, If you have flexible duct you need to replace the whole duct or the areas that are damaged.

First determine how big the leaks are. If the leaks are small, the you will need silver foil tape for duct. Place the tape over the leaks to seal. If the leaks are large, then you need to cut open the insulation and seal them with the foil tape and then rewrap the duct with foil/foam duct insulation.

Home improvment stores sale special tape for this problem. The tape is silver in color, and feels like it is made of metal. The tape holds best if you wrap it one complete revolution around your leaking duct. You can also cut out the leaking section and replace it with a new duct.

First with your AC system running, try using a candle or incense stick to observe where the leak is occurring. The flame will flicker or smoke will move near the source of the leak (Be careful with open flames. ) Next, try to seal the duct with either duct tape (metal type) or duct mastic.

Air leaking out of AC ducts can be stopped in one of a couple easy ways. Buy a roll of duct tape for just a couple of dollars. Wrap the duct at the leak spot once or twice to completely seal the leak. A latex caulk also works well to seal duct leaks.
