We've had this same problem and my best suggestion is to get a whole house water filter installed on your system intake. The best place for installation is after the well housing inside your home, but before the water is distributed. This filter will collect the rust particles and prevent them from clogging your appliances and toilets.

If you make a call to a local well company in your area, then they should have the people and the tools to take care of a problem like this. Don't try to take care of it yourself it could be dangerous for you.

Are you asking because you have rust in your water? If so, you can get a water softner. A water softner uses salt to make water less hard. There is a variety of water softner salts that are called iron busters. The water softner combined with a water purifier should drastically improve your water.

Take a long brush, use the rust removing chemical substances available in the market to clean the rusty area of your well with the brush. After doing so spray some water on the cleaned area of the well. Then pump all the waste water outside from the well. Repeat cleaning it with water once again.

Rust in your well can be assumed to be is rust in your water. To assess the problem, it might be a good idea to get your water tested. If you just need to get rid of iron in the system, the most economical would be a type of sand filter that you can backwash.

First check out the quality of your water. If the water is in the unacceptable range, use a water softner and add a rust remover product to remove the rust.

Rust in a fresh water drinking well is a very serious matter. Call your local county extension agency for the best solution. Its not an easy problem to solve.

If the rust is not that serious, pouring two bottles of white vinegar down the well should remove all rust stains or other stains.
