Your battery could just be old. Has it been recharged many, many times? If so, you may just need a new battery.

It seems likely that if your Dell Latitude is running low on battery that you'll need to simply replace it with a new one. (The battery that is) Batteries for laptops tend to have a short life span.

When troubleshooting battery issues I start with PassMark Software's BatteryMon Utility. It displays a lot of information and detail about your battery that can be hard to locate elsewhere, like maximum capacity, current charge level, charge / discharge rate, current temperature, etc...

Troubleshooting this issue involves defining the source of the problem: software or hardware. The hardware implies the battery or the charger is faulty; to solve this one way is to replace them from another same type laptop. The software related error is caused by lack or corrupted mother board drivers, where the battery itself working properly.

If you battery is over a year old then most likely you will need to replace it. It's best and safest to go back to the hardware manufacturer for replacement. First drain the battery completely, recharge and see if this helps, if not, replace your battery.

What I would do was borrow a battery from someone else that you know works then put it in your laptop if it shows a low battery warning then it is the computer, If it does not then you know that it is a battery problem.

If the battery is not low, then search for PowerMeter and install that o check the actual charge left. It it's hardware, then the battery needs replacing (most likely).

The first thing to do it to use it without the plug in and let the battery run out entirely. ONce this has happened plug it in and let it charge for 8-10 hours without using it. Turn the computer back on after this time and check the battery level. If its low you need a new battery.

Have you tried replacing the battery? You should also test your power cord and make sure it's putting out the correct amperage.

If the battery is always low. The Battery is likely at the end of its useful life and will no longer take a charge. Replace it.

The battery that you have is out of warranted which means you have to buy another one for your laptop.

This happened to me, and it was happening because the AC adapter was not working properly. It gave enough energy for the computer to run but not charge the battery.
