Medicine in the 1700s was extremely primitive when compared to today or even the 1800s. Although inoculation from certain diseases began around this time, there was still no understanding of micro-organisms and how disease was actually spread. One popular method that doctors used to treat patients was to "bleed" them, to remove bad blood.

Modern medical practices were not available. There was no understanding of germs or infections. Blood letting was a common practice for curing everything from fever to nervous disorders. Most people used folk reamidies for everyday ailments.
