In puppies, a heart murmur may go away. In other dogs no treatment may be needed. The vet will consider the overall health and age of the dog.

Amurmur diagnosis in a dog is not a death sentence, but it can progress to a more serious health issue if left unchecked. Usually, a change in diet and perhaps a prescription is all that is needed to help a dog live a long and active life after the intial diagnosis.

Some heart murmurs can be treated, some are mild and can be lived with, and some drastically shorten the lifespan of the dog. When murmurs show up in young puppies, they might correct themselves as they get older.

This is not a disease that requires medication at this time but it needs to be monitored by your vet. A murmur is a sign of valve malfunction in the heart. It can become serious and so should be checked yearly.
