The procedure is to treat the condition of shoulder impingement. This surgical procedure helps 85% of patients. The surgeon will make at least two 5mm incisions to insert an arthroscope, which looks for the cause of the pain. This is more accurate than an MRI. The arthroscope is then used to fix the bone spur characteristic of this condition.

If a shoulder dislocation happens then an shoulder decompression can be done. This is an method in which the ball joint of the shoulder is fixed in the socket and then compressed.

It can be done either arthroscopically or open. The surgeon will enter the shoulder and smooth off the spur that is contributing to inflammation and impingement on the rotator cuff.
