The cause of febrile seizures is not known. It is know, however, that febrile seizures have no long-term ill effects and are not harbingers of future difficulties.

Due to immaturity of the brain, abnormal signals may result in convulsions especially in the upswing of a high fever (> 39°C). It should not be associated with neurological abnormalities.

A febrile seizure can occur when a person has a spike in a fever, the fevers are generally caused by bacterial infections or viral infections. Some children can experience a febrile seizure in response to a fever after an immunization. Febrile seizures can also occur on the decline of a fever.

Febrile seizures are thought to be caused by the fevers themselves. They usually do not indicate a tendency to have seizure problems beyond the toddler/early childhood years. No one knows exactly why some kids get them and some don't.
