Split fingernails are often a side effect of dehydration or a vitamin deficiency. Vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acids are needed for healthy hair, skin and nails. Try adding them into your diet with fish and dark green veggies. If that doesn't help, try suppliments and keeping a layer of vitamin infused topcoat on your nails to help strengthen them.

Sometimes your body does not take in enough protein. In this case you can try geletin caplets to make the nails strengthen.

Split fingernails could be caused from banging them, but most likely your fingernails are weak and brittle. The way to fix it is to eat nutrient rich foods.

Split fingernails are often caused by over-exposure to water, such as by washing dishes too much or spending too much time in the bath or swimming pool. If that's doesn't resonate, then another cause of split fingernails might be very frequent usage (i.e., several times per month) of nail polish remover.

Split fingernails are most often caused because you have your hands in water to much. This will make them continue to split because you keep putting them in water for long periods of time. Seems to happen to womens nails more than mens.
