Stuttering may develop (in small kids) as a way of controlling the conversation while they organize their thoughts. Other causes are neurological problems and genetics.

Recent research has identified the cause of stuttering as being genetic (rather than a learned behavior). A recent report released by the New England Journal of Medicine explained that researchers have identified three mutations in the brain cells of stutterers located in the part of the brain that controls speech.
