What could be the cause of my dog licking things constantly?

This is a compulsion seen mostly in dogs that have experienced neglect before finding a good home, or simply cannot stop its compulsive behavior. The licking in most cases I have seen has come from severely abused dogs that constantly do this to show "submission" to their keepers. Other dogs simply have a compulsive disorder, as some humans do.

Dogs develop an oral fixation when they've been separated from their mothers (weaned) too early. Did you adopt your dog younger than 10 weeks old? Also, some itchy skin conditions can promote excessive licking of the paws because it soothes the itch.

If you have a young dog they might just be curious. But even with a young dog and especially an older dog might have a cut or a tumor or a rash that could be causing them discomfort on their tongue in turn causing them to lick stuff.

Licking is a normal and instinctive part of a dog's behavior, but it can become obsessive under certain conditions. Causes of constant licking could be boredom, stress, illness or even a new daily routine.

Constant licking can be from several different behavioral issues, anxiety, and nausea. Think about how long the constant licking has gone on and if there are certain times when the dog tends to lick more. If you rule out nausea, the reason is much more complex and harder to handle.

Usually this is a cause of something lacking in the diet that they are on. It could be a nervous condition or that he is just not stimulated in his environment also.

This is either a nervous tendency or the dog might possibly have a hair ball. Call your vet for more information.

One cause could be that he has some bacteria on his tongue and he's itching his tongue. Look at his tongue to see if there is any visible bacteria.

The dog may have an obsessive compulsive disorder, where he is unable to stop licking. Also, if the dog is having stress or anxiety it could cause constant licking.
