What did a crucifixion consist of in Roman times?

The person would be nailed to a cross (sometimes shaped like an X). Spikes would be driven through the hands and feet and the person would be left to die.

A Roman crucifixion would consist of tying a person, using both nails and ropes, to a wodden T with his arms outstreatched and their feet crossed at the bottom.
