Hickies are bruises created with the mouth and sometimes with the fingers. Because most are suction marks most are round and because they are intended to feel good they are in areas of sensitive skin such as the neck.

Hickies are bruises so it's not surprise they look like them. They are caused by the rupturing of blood vessels when pressure is applied to the skin whether it be through suction or a blow. They are usually red and irritated when fresh, slowly darkening as the blood seeps into out layers of skin for re absorption.
