What do you call someone whom is mute but very intelligent?

I have a friend that is mute, however he is very smart.

It would be best just to refer to him as your friend. When introducing him, you would probably want to mention that he is unable to speak but his hearing is fine. When your friend responds to others in writing or with sign language, they will soon realize his intelligence.

While someone who is mute might be called "dumb" it isn't an assessment of intellect. I'm sure your friend is very smart, very astute, and should be called brilliant, just like you would any other person. You could still describe him as a mute, but also very smart!
